Don't use for family research

Update by user Nov 30, 2019

Ancestry continues to raise membership prices. Since findagrave is part of them now, I'd say 1/4 of my annual dues is a waste.

Update by user Nov 30, 2019

Too much information on this site to use for genealogy.

Original review posted by user Nov 30, 2019
I have quite a few memorials on findagrave. Evidently, since Ancestry bought it, things have changed and not for better. I have found numerous relatives of mine that are incorrect as to their relationship to other family members. One has my grandmother as a 1/2 sibling to her own mother. The person who has control won't answer my request to change it. That person also has 1/2 siblings listed to my grandmother who would actually be 1/2 aunts/uncles.

If it’s been longer than a month since you sent the memorial edit request, send an email explaining the problem to: edit@***.com Explain the problem BRIEFLY. Show the suggested edit, the date it was sent, to whom and any responses.

If they won’t respond to you and help out, or they refer you to the general Edit process ( which you already know about because you submitted Edits), or they don’t respond at all, delete all your memorials and your account and refused to do business with a company who clearly doesn’t give a crap about doing things the right way, or your input to make things better. I know, it’s not the answer I wouldn’t want to receive either, but it seems to be the norm with their customer service which isn’t “customer oriented” at all.

Pros
  • I used to love it using the old web site
Cons
  • Inability to file complaints with company
  • Error linking to ancestry also liked the old website
Reason of review
Very inaccurate information
Preferred solution
Ancestry needs to redo policies and the website.

Wrong Email

I was trying to open a free FAG account and I mistakenly put the wrong email address. How can I correct this problem? I did go in to reopen an new account but it is telling me to conform my account by email. What do I do? Sad

You don’t have to confirm an email address if you don’t want to. If you used an incorrect email address to sign up, and the system sent you a message to confirm it but you don’t want to use it, then delete that email.

Because you have not responded, that account will not be opened associated with that email address, which should end your problem.

If you still want an account, sign up using the proper email address you want to use, and a new password for the account. Make sure to log out and try to log back in to see if it works.

Even though the website tells you you can set up a password with special characters in it, like the “&” symbol, that is not the case. Simply set up a password with a mixture of capital and lowercase letters and numbers.

Do not use commonly used words or phrases for a password.

F.A.G. Support has been notified of this problem and supposedly it was escalated, however, based on other problems I’ve seen this may or may not be the case.

Cannot leave a message for a memorial transfer

Update by user Dec 04, 2019

Nobody contacted me from the company. The issue is not resolved.

Original review posted by user Nov 03, 2019
I have a relative that some other member has created a memorial for and when I went to that individual page it read that they do not want messages but on the bio info it read that no one can use the information unless contacted. So, you see the dilemma?

Submit an Edit for the problem to the memorial manager through the “suggest edits” section from the memorial in question, wait 30 days and if they don’t respond and/or resolve this, send an email to: edit@***.com Referred to this problem as an “inappropriate biography”, and memorial issues. Briefly explain the problem. If their response back is to submit an edit via the suggest edit section, meaning they didn’t read your email and are just blowing you off or stalling you, resend a copy of the email back to them using the same address above and include the data showing when you submitted the edit to get things changed.

#1798032

Stupid question did you do the suggest edits and then in there is another edit you can send message there

I have one issue is to resolve this matter

Searching for a person, but you don't know where they are buried.

I did as you suggested earlier went to my profile and selected Member option under following and put in a name. The problem is it only shows born and died. It does not allow you the oppurtunity to put the city, county, and state you think they are buried in.By listing without the city, county, state it is drawn from the US as a whole. Could you email me instructions in FAG to do this search. My email address is butler.mike@***.net

Click on the FindAGrave logo and go to the homepage. Type in the name of the person you’re searching for, and the cemetery location you believe they are buried in.

The Cemetery Location field must be entered as city, county, state and country. The actual name of the cemetery at this point is irrelevant so don’t try to search on it . Example: say you’re searching for John Doe, and you think he’s buried in he’s cemetery in Denver. Type in “Denver, CO” and a list of possible cemetery locations should show below.

Pick the one you want to look in and enter. You can cross check a search by entering in the name of the person you were looking for, and the city and state do you think they’re buried in into a Google search engine.

What is wrong with posting a photo on this website? Did ya pick out a cheap stone and are embarrassed?

I think it is beneficial to have the photos, if I can’t travel to another state to personal take a photo I’m glad someone put that photo on here so I can at least see the stone. Do be so sensitive, we all need to know from where came.

I cannot reach anybody at Find-a-Grave if it requires interaction with links on the home page. I am still getting notices and edits--but I am no longer recognized by FAG! No issues or misbehavior on my part--just blip and GONE.

Henry King Odom Memorial 3745****

Find A Grave - Henry King Odom Memorial 3745****
Find A Grave 2018 Forced Correction Henry King Odom - 3745**** In 2009 Cecelia Stewart (#4711****) created a Find A Grave Memorial (#3745****) for a person titled Henry King Odom. It ran for 9 years with the incorrect data. When confronted with the true facts Cecelia Stewart did not / would not willingly make the corrections to the Henry King Odom biography. In January 2018 Cecelia Stewart was made to remove her incorrect version of Henry King Odom biography in the recorded Henry King Odom's Find A Grave Memorial. Cecelia Stewart was at the same time made to use as the replacement of the factual true biography written by Henry King Odom's grt-granddaughter . This was 9 years after Cecelia created the incorrect data but not before Family Search.com (ChristineHB7 - 2015) along with 30 Odom Family Trees had put Cecelia Stewart's incorrect data into their ancestry tree. Fact: Tristram Odom was Henry King Odom's UNCLE. This data in this new biography profile is an accurate & factual account of the son of James W. Odom, Jr. and Rebecca Odom. ...By Nancy Craig Solt

If you type Find A Grave Complaints, there are several people who are suggesting filing a class action as they are posting private graves owned by the families without their permission. And as with me, I proved my relationship to my father by sending them a photo of my birth certificate and telling them that I wanted his memorial permanently deleted.

Guess What? They totally ignored me.

#1809265

Where is our gratitude when somebody goes to the trouble to add a memorial for someone who is neither kith nor kin? Did you even ask the contributor?

Did you ask but threaten to sue if he doesn't remove it? Is this not a public service we choose to assist in? Some of the contributor profiles are combative and nasty right out of the gate.

It seems that when some people know they'll never meet another member, they feel they can be rude and threatening. Pretty sad.

#1771565

The right to privacy ends at death. His birth and death dates will be published by the Social Security administration.

#1793932
@Shakelia

That is really rude! Where does the respect for the dead start? I love FDG , but get a bit tired of the temperamental wimps on there.

#1826720
@PissedConsumer1793932

It's rude of the United States government to publish data on the deceased? One of the reasons they (the government) does so is to prevent misuse of the deceased's information.

The OP is completely and utterly wrong that someone's birth and death dates are "private".

In addition, no one "owns" information about their family members, living or dead. Facts (names, dates, locations) cannot be owned because no one created them.
