Find A Grave - Poorly organised

I have had trouble since the site changed hands. Recently the sign in failed to recognise my password so I created a new one and was accepted. Ten minutes later I had to sign in again and up popped the notice 'Your password has not been recognised, your account has been frozen for thirty minutes' They can freeze my account for eternity if they wish , I have done with them. Organise and organize are different spellings of the same word. Organize is the preferred spelling in the U.S.

and Canada, and organise is more common in the United Kingdom.

I've managed to get over how they murdered my 7-greats grandfather, more or less, but I also wouldn't accuse them of murdering the language. They invented it, and we merely refined it.

Don't know where you got the idea that "Ancestry.com will not put up with people stealing "any" copyrighted materials at all" because they (Ancestry and F.A.G.) do allow it. Just look at F.A.G.

rules that you can use any photo on F.A.G. on other "Ancestry community" sites.

It sounds like your account has been disabled, or made "Record Not Available". That usually means you repeatedly did something that isn't allowed.

Find A Grave - Followed the rules, but I got punished not the harasser

This year, there was a suicide in our area. As the deceased is a distant relation through marriage, I created and sponsored a lovely, respectful memorial that I felt our side of the family could be proud of viewing. Two weeks later, a 13 year account created a duplicate memorial and used his link to harass the decedent's family. He posted on online forums begging people to leave comments for the family, turning our cousin's death into a sick little popularity contest for him. We reported him to site administration and, instead of banning him or deleting his page, they merged it wanted that. Now our nice little page is full of those nasty vulgar comments and we can't remove any of them ! The last straw, the insult to injury, they locked down the page! We can't edit or update any information on the memorial! We can't add or change any of our family member's picture. We did nothing wrong and we were penalized over the immaturity and harassing behavior of another person. I will never give this site a dime again. The only reason I haven't deleted all my pages and left that place is because I can't bear to see our loss turned into a circus again.

Well, the final chapter: they again removed from my care the memorial I created and paid to sponsor to another person whom I assume to be from the family. I'm not going to pout over our ownership being revoked but it is sad that we were treated so badly by the site and the person trolling the rest of the family was never penalized. I don't feel that my business is wanted by Ancestry.com so I will comply with their wishes and refrain from using their service or spending money with them.

Some of the people their who do spread sheets try to bully other people around as if were they were the ones who invented and discovered findagrave. Like someone else once said ; there are some very twisted people hanging out there who deliberately try to pick fights with serious contributors.

They are emotionally disturbed and are better ignored.

Sadly!!!! some people never reach adult hood__ They are genuine idiots!

Even worse, there are some contributors on this site who are jealous of other contributors because they have better family history. They are down right ignorant people/// and are the overloaded heap of a smelly trash sack!

It happens all the time! There are people there on this site who have been contributors (HOARDERS) for over a decade who sit around there all day, every day with empty memorials with OLD ENTRY DATES!

These fools then have the nerve to go steal the information from a newly entered memorial by someone else who has good intentions ---- then they go confiscate all the information from the newly made memorial---AND YELL DUPLICATE! Corruption and big lying thieves!

Find A Grave - Is this a scam?

I just signed up for an account with Ancestry.com Then I tried to access information which they agree to provide only to be shown a page on updating my account. This page was nearly impossible to delete. Then, when I tried again to access information about a deceased person, I was told the page could not be accessed. This happens consistently every time I try to obtain information from death records. I actually wanted the service so that I could later pursue information about my own family tree, especially about my biological father. I also note there is no place provided for cancellation of the 14 day trial or the subsequent service. I am disgusted.

I absolutely agree with 'Unjustly Banned'. Find A Grave is a private website and they have every right to ban anyone as they see fit.

However it's a circle of snobs who rule the site they damage it's reputation by unreasonable banning, stealing the hard work of others, denying access to paid for memorials, allowing preferred members to post while deleting and taking credit for the work of others. I see it happening all time on Find A Grave, it's not right.

Find A Grave is owned and run by a small circle of conceited self-righteous, thin skinned, boorish and despicable people.

Really Jim Tipton, grow up and make Find A Grave respectable.

When the poster updated her complaint, she said the same people were causing problems here as on Find A Grave. Seems that was the complainant.

She did these things over and over again

Posted photos from obits

Had URLs and links in the bio

Listed survivors in obits

Copied & pasted full obits w/o permission

It is highly unlikely she was kicked off Find A Grave with no warning whatsoever.

She was probably told by the admins to stop doing the above things and to remove those from her memorials. It probably wasn't that she wasn't doing it fast enough but that she was continuing to do all of the above.

Details
Find a grave does not enforce the rules set up in their TOS. I requested my great grandparent transferred to me (as in their TOS) from a non relative. I was refused and when I complained the administrators refused to answer my emails. Find a Grave is owned by Ancestry.com which will steal and sell your information by any means available. Find a Grave is simply a tool for the collection of research to sell without cost to Ancestry or LDS. I'm keeping my account but no longer giving information, corrections, pictures or money to Find A Grave. It is ok for research and finding cemeteries but not as a place worth participating or sharing information. Also, a lot of the members are simply there to generate numbers for recognition as a "top contributor". I found my name, birth date, and picture of joint tombstone and had a devil of a time convincing Find A Grave I was not really dead. Poorly administered website....but being owned by Ancestry, what do you expect!

It doesn't matter if LDS has something to do with fid-a-grave or not. It would probably be a good idea if they did as they show more respect for others. Although their are some really not so good LDS on find-a-grave who give the church a bad name, and meaner than a jumping rattle-snake!

Yes as you said they work very hard to maintain this information when you have time to complain then you need to stop and think count all the people that you know that would set day in and day out and do this work . Yes it is called work.. I have spent 40+ yrs working on my gemology and it has taken that long .i researched ancestry and figured out a lot and without find a grave I wouldn't be 1/2 close to where I am.

I remember most of these yrs I spent there were no records of any kind out there anywhere to hunt a grave and graveyard. So it's my pleasure to congratulate these folks they do all they can to make my search much better

Find A Grave - Memorial Transfers

I have tried unsuccessfully for several months to have my paternal gg-grandfather's memorial transferred to my account, as I am linking my paternal ancestors, as well as maternal. One volunteer on the website states that they will transfer up to the 4th generation. But I have been told by Find A Grave administrators they will not transfer gg-grandparents. I pointed out that I have memorials for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and even 5th g-grandparents (some which I created myself). One very nice volunteer even transferred my 3rd g-grandmother's sister to me. They have been very rude and hateful to me. I don't see what the big deal is! This website has been very helpful in my family tree research, but I will delete all my memorials if they continue to deny me the right to have my gg-grandparents transferred to me. It's a simple request and they are being very unreasonable.

I question why anyone would need to keep 100,000 or more pages. I question why anyone would want to keep even 10,000 people they are not related to.

If you made the page your name remains as creator.

So what is the big deal? You cannot possibly keep up with 100,000 pages.

Don't try to tell us you are not in it for numbers when you have hoarded tens of thousands of pages and refuse to part with any of them until the site forces you to.

That is not memorializing anyone - that is active OCD.

These pages represent actual human beings. Let people have the pages who actually care about them.

The "hoarders" are the family members who are also most likely to break other rules, like duplicating and unknown burial locations for the long-dead.

Use the site for what it's worth and build a family tree elsewhere. Dealing with a system built on territorial memorial hoarders is a nightmare if you expect fairness and any sort of sense. I have gotten much from the site and contributed some myself, but it is straight up messy if you get too involved or expect it to work with any degree of sense.

Anonymous
#828376

I feel your frustration. I traced my family all the way back to the colonies and everyone has been real helpful and transferred my family to my management when requested regardless of generation.

However, there is this one ***, there is always one, who refuses to transfer my grandfather to me. He doesn't mean anything to her other than a number. All some of these people do is put in a name and some dates and call it a memorial. Then sit around and wait for someone else to add photos and other information.

And I am fine with that, but give it over to the family when requested.

I hoped *** would make some changes when Ancestry bought it, but they kept the same people in place. I don't think things will get any better until changes are made at the top.

It is a shame that people care more about their numbers than to allow family to maintain family memorials no matter the generation "guidelines". What a cop out> it's not within the "guidelines".

Not cool! Just transfer the memorial, f.a.g.

members have trouble showing kindness if just one member would start showing some kindness hopefully it will be passed on to all the heartless F.a.g. members that hoard and only volunteer for the "numbers".

The man Jim Tipton is a slimy weasel who made millions if not tens of millions in the sale of my and the other posts, most still wanting to be there. Mine were abducted and in every sense of the word stolen from me.

Find A Grave - Suicide

My best friend killed herself. The person that entered and manages her memorial on findagrave is not even related and added all the details in the bio about how she died. None of this was written in an obit just known around the neighborhood. Everyone knew what really happened but the parents are crushed. People in our small town try not to hurt others. The parents not only have lost a daughter but are horrified about how she died. We her friends and the parents have asked the creator of the memorial to please delete this part of the bio. Nobody minds if they manage or created the memorial. Nobody minds if one day a photo is posted of the grave. The person will never respond to the requests and will not delete the hurtful information. Please be careful when you enter information about a person who has died. Please dont hurt a family more than they already have suffered. Put yourself in their shoes.

As a contributor to FindAGrave, I believe the person who entered your friend's memorial is very callus. When I enter a memorial and the person's obit. shows that they were killed in an accident, I never put that information in. Usually I won't even enter that memorial. I know you said that the information that was put on FindAGrave was not in the obituary, but even it it had been, there was no reason to put that online.

Obviously this contributor has no interest in others' feelings and is extra rude for NOT responding to you.

The creators of FindAGrave will respond to you. It may take time as they are NOT a large organization. Let Steve Edquist at FindAGrave what has happened and he will take care of it.

I'm so sorry about your friend.
