I have been researching genealogy for over 20 years. The information available via Find a Grave is usually in Ancestry. My family is upset because my relatives' (including my father and brother) private family cemetery, located on private property (we have the deed)...

They did the same to my mothers headstone. Took a picture without consent and put it online.

My mothers burial was private and we even kept obituary offline. These *** come along and take a picture and put it online. That is an invasion of privacy.

So now I keep watching to see if they do it again. I will take legal action.

Someone posted a listing that consisted entirely of an obituary and a photograph stolen from a website. This is a copyright violation. The listing also gives the names of living people which is against findagrave's policy. The person who posted the listing is not known to the family and does not accept messages through findagrave so we could not request removal from them. Three emails to findagrave requesting the listed be removed over a four month period have gone unanswered. Our family is afraid for our safety.

If you are the copyright holder, you absolutely can get your copyrighted material (i.e. obituary or photo) removed. You simply have to write a letter containing the required information.

If you type Find A Grave Complaints, there are several people who are suggesting filing a class action as they are posting private graves owned by the families without their permission. And as with me, I proved my relationship to my father by sending them a photo of my birth certificate and telling them that I wanted his memorial permanently deleted.

Guess What? They totally ignored me.

I have been posting information and photos on this site for some time. Recently I've had a "troll" that has been adding information and "meddling" with my information. I know who it is and I told them to stop. They didn't They're not family and most of what they post is wrong. This "toll" has filled a page with photo requests from local cemeteries. I don't have time for it. So I contacted Find A Grave SEVERAL TIMES to block this "troll" and delete their requests. NO ANSWER. Since this website is free I can't cancel my subscription. It's not a major issue, just annoying. And I get enough BS from other sources!

Find A Grave - Sold to Ancestry.com

Well...........adding required number of words.......... if you had issues with findagrave before, your troubles are just beginning. yada yada yada yada yada Ancestry.com bought the site and will make a fortune withholding in for mation unless you join and pay them a month ly fee. Boy cott, seems to be your only way to protest and let off steam. I think I will delete all pictures I've posted on findagrave before they start charging for people to access them. Stop reading now, I'm still adding words and making two words out of one, for the min imum 100 word re quire ment. Sorry about that Still add ing words. Gu ess I'll just ha ve to go back and cou nt the num ber of words that i have typed.

There were tons of problems before Ancestry ever took over the site. Ancestry seems to deal a bit better with the BULLIES. Bulling seems to be the biggest problem there along with some very insane stalkers who have multiple accounts just to harass members, which they also have no life outside of fg.

Speaking of no life this one who has 219,000 memorials and to top it off gets adamant when you ask for a transfer. https://www.findagrave.com/user/profile/4663**** These people put up memorials and when someone edits it with the proper information that person gets no credit whatsoever.

The site itself is riddled with errors much like Ancestry, Family search, My Heritage, and all the rest.

The members do all the work and the owners get the cheque. Than again slavery is nothing new to America.

I have to agree with you. I have come across a few very old members there who completely lose their composure when asking them for a family to be transferred over to me.

These oddballs completely flip-out and have involuntary seizures . They think it is halloween all year around.

Find A Grave - Pure *** with FAG

If you have cousins who plot together, know how to tell convincing lies, then really, really beware! I have two of these kind of cousins who went on a rampage because I would not play ball and transfer all of my family memorials, because they have the strange idea that if I should die - FAG would take the memorials and then they would never be able to manage the memorials. AND so then they went to war with it. They accused me of fraud - and several other things like when I was documenting a cemetery, I became aware that one of the cousins was taking material from Canadian Headstones, and using that info, to document on the cemetery I was working on, so I told her "you forget that I am only 5 minutes away from that cemetery" - she pasted that sentence onto a complaint and said she felt threatened, and the rest is history. To this day I cannot for the life of me figure how that can be translated to be a threat, especially given that she lives in another province from me! There were other games played, and each time they complained , FAG chose to believe them. Some of it was pretty weird.

I love that there is a site to locate graves.etc. And the fact that this is free is huge. It costs so much to join other info sites that used to be free. That said, I have a small complaint. I found the family I was searching for. Most of them are in the same cemetery....

You CAN contact the memorial manager. In the upper right-hand corner of each memorial page is a button that says "Edit." Click that, then select "Suggest any other correction," the sixth option down.

That will allow you to send an email to the memorial manager.

You complained about Find A Grave when you couldn't even be bothered to read the FAQs or log into the Forum. You then got in a snit because Admin didn't respond quickly to your email. A big reason email responses take so long on the site is folks like yourself who can't be bothered reading the guidelines or asking community members for help.

There was no reason to go to Admin with this. You could have solved your own issue AND not looked stupid in public.

Find A Grave - GAVE MY GRANDMOTHER'S MEMORIAL TO STRANGER

1.0
Details
I FOUND A DUPLICATE MEMORIAL FOR MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER, I TRIED TO REQUEST VIA EMAIL FROM THE NON-FAMILY MEMBER WHO HAS IT, BUT SHE HAD "DISABLED" HER EMAIL (This contributor has their messages disabled) I REPORTED THIS TO FIND A GRAVE, AND THEY STUPIDLY DECIDED TO "MERGE" BOTH MEMORIALS TOGETHER, DELETING MINE AND GIVING IT TO THIS STRANGER. ALL THE WORK I HAD DONE, ADDING SIBLINGS, PARENTS ETC TO MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER'S MEMORIAL IS NOW IN THE HANDS OF THIS STRANGER WHO HAD DISABLED HER EMAILS SO SHE DOESN'T HAVE TO RESPOND TO ANYONE. I FIND THIS EXTREMELY UNACCEPTABLE AND IN BAD TASTE. I WILL PURSUE OTHER AVENUES TO CORRECT THIS, EVEN IF IT MEANS TAKING LEGAL ACTION.

I agree with you completely. Find A Grave is not responsive to family members.

I have a similar problem with mt 3rd Great Grandparents. Some of the information on their memorials is simply wrong and the "manager" has her e-mail and messages blocked.

Find A Grave's position is that the "memorial is outside of our transfer guidelines". This is causing confusion and embarrassment to family members.

Have you fully followed the procedure to get the memorial corrected through the Edit tab and then follow-up?

@PissedConsumer1345001

I will try that. I have old family photos of them that I would like on there as well.

This entire situation is full of problems. To begin with the contributor doesn't even live here. She lives in Salt Lake City, Utah.

I doubt she has even been to the Cemetery where they are buried. Thank You so much for the suggestion!

Shakelia
#1345013
@PissedConsumer1345003

Contributors aren't required to live in the area or to have been to the cemetery.

Be sure to read the FAQs about how to get an error corrected and follow each step. It even tells you what to do if the "fact" edits are declined.

Sebastien
#1343238

You must work for them. Did you not read my complaint thoroughly?

I have been doing genealogy research for 20+ years. I know how find a grave works. I don't need any lessons.My memorial was in a cemetery. My memorial was older then hers.

The fact remains that this woman disabled her ability to receive messages/edit requests.

The fact remains that's she ignored my personal emails that I sent her. The fact remains that she is more interested in accumulating memorials, so she can be listed on top contributor list, then responding to the families of these memorials who should be in control, not strangers.

Shakelia
#1343766
@Sebastien

I did read your original complaint where you didn't say anything about whether the memorial was created in a cemetery. No, I do not work for them.

I too understand how the site works. Active F.A.G. contributors can NOT disable the ability to receive edit requests. The Edit tab works on EVERY memorial.

The first five options are for field entries. You can send an "email" to them by using the "Suggest any other correction" option (the 6th). Again, they can NOT turn off that ability.

It doesn't matter if their email address is displayed on their profile - they will still get emails sent via the Edit tab's 6th option. As far as profile messages, each contributor has the choice whether or not to have them enabled even though some would like the right to dictate to everyone else.What "legal action" do you think you can take?

Shakelia
#1343215

Find A Grave generally merges newer memorial into the older one, regardless of who created them. The exception to that is when the older memorial is not "in" a cemetery.

Since the other memorial was the one retained, yours was either the newer one or the one not in a cemetery.Whenever you want to contact a Find A Grave contributor about a memorial, you should use the Edit tab on that memorial. The top 5 options are for data fields.

The 6th one will generate an email to the memorial manager. This is all covered in the FAQs.
