If you go to the edit tab and corrections at bottom, message to creator that you want a transfer of your g grandfather. Give your membership number.

If she won't transfer, they will automatically transfer within 30 days. Another way is to copy and paste his web address to edit@***e and say he is your g grandfather and the person won't transfer.

Find A Grave - Wrong information added by volunteer

A few years ago a local volunteer created a FAG entry for my father. She then proceeded to look him up on the Internet and add the information she found. Problem is, the person she found (yes the name and approximately birth date were correct) was not my father at all! It took some doing, but I finally gained control of the listing and got her off of it. Today I discovered that the biography listed for my mother is attributed to another volunteer. Wrong!! I wrote that biography for her memorial service and for the local paper. Sometimes volunteers are helpful, other times they overstep the bounds and are simply meddling and creating problems for other people to clean up.

I'm guessing when you say attributed to that there is a clickable link in the bio to indicate its origin. Perhaps two memorials were merged and the bio transferred from the deleted one to the remaining one.

I'm not sure anybody did it on purpose, but given their track record of skullduggery it might not be out of the question, either. I mean to say that every day is just another rotten mess - and when it's going to end my friend, is anybody's guess.

Find A Grave - Wonderful

I have used this site for many years and it has been fundamental in my genealogy research, there is so much information packed on this site that I have been able to find back 12 generations in some cases! I love helping by transcribing and taking photos. I have only run into a very small few people whom are rude, or who refuse to be helpful. The original way the site is set up is the version I prefer, it is simple and easy to use, I do not care for the new version, but I also have not truly given it a chance. I am very grateful for this site and I hope to see whats next. My opinion is that if you do not like how the site is run, don't use it.

The site is an excellent resource. Those of us who used it liked the way it worked and wanted to continue to do so. So your suggestion that we no longer use it because they changed the format to a less useful and less informative format is not helpful.

I don't see anything improved, except that the GPS location can be added.

I'd be interested in knowing what exactly you like about the new format.

FindAGrave admin can step in if you have documentation of your facts. From their FAQs are two hints:

"If you have official documentation for the update but have been declined".....

and "What if I suggest a correction and the contributor doesn't respond?"

Having a correction made is different from asking for the memorial to be transferred to you. Transfers are not required if they do not fall within the transfer guidelines. But corrections can be dealt with if you have documentation.

Even if the memorial's manager does not allow for messages or emails, within the site itself is a way to communicate to them.

Check the FAQs for details on how to work through the problem. Good luck.

Find A Grave - Garbage In, Garbage Out

*** can be helpful in research, but like Ancestry, there are so many errors, it hard to know what is right. Many contributors take photos and create records of every name in a cemetery--whether anyone is buried or not. Purchase of a plot and stone is called preplanning and does not constitute a burial. Contributors create the records with no knowledge of the family. Several of my relatives have errors related to maiden names and children. Some contributors are more willing to correct, but why make up data to begin without? I don't have an issue with establishing a record of deceased individuals, but leave the living alone and do not make up info on your contribution if you have no personal knowledge of the family.

If someone is "mowing the rows" (taking a photo of every grave in the cemetery), they do not know more information than what is on the stone. Additional information may come from research OR from edits submitted by others.

There is no way to know what was added directly by the memorial creator or what was submitted by others and which the memorial manager accepted on "good faith" believing others would not knowingly submit false info. Therefore, blaming the memorial manager for "making up" info is unfair.

Good news!! You can submit corrections to the incorrect info on the Edit tab.

If your suggestion is declined, you can follow up with documentation to the manager by sending a "Suggest A Correction (the 6th option on the Edit tab). After 30 days, if the manager still won't correct the memorial, you can appeal to Find A Grave directly by forwarding the "Suggest A Correction" to the appropriate address and clearly/succinctly requesting the change.

I agree completely... it is not fair (or ethical) to leave the family out of the loop when making decisions about the content of these memorials.

I do like the ability to establish a memorial for our loved ones.

But many of the contributors on Find A Grave are not receptive to input from the family. Find A Grave's policies stand firmly by this disregard of the family of the deceased.

Those who are grumbling in the flower department, as said, whine about everything and everyone.

They are to be ignored! On with the changes *-*-*-.....

Find A Grave - Copy write infrignment

I have published some personal things with the disclamier of being copy righted name of book and year of copy right, that were published in my family history books on memorials that I created only to be stolen by someone clicking, copying and re posting as if it were their own information. When asking the person who stole the information to please take it down you get really nasty answers calling you names. This is not a safe place to post stories about your family members, who knows where they will end up. I find it interesting that the thief responds by calling you names making the situation even worse. I am in the process of taking down all copy written material.

There are people on this site who are so morally and mentally low that they will go and copy what another person has written and posted as if they had written it themselves, (TOO ***) this includes your personal emails if you happen to write to one of these lowlifes. Be-careful! There are some extremely uneducated "Ding-Bats" there who have no writing skills what-so-ever nor do they have the education to write something on there own ----so they go tell lies, cheat and steal the work of other contributors ---- they only know how to copy what others have written.

You said "I have published some personal things with the disclamier of being copy righted name of book and year of copy right, that were published in my family history books on memorials that I created"

Do you mean you wrote the pieces yourself? That's the only way you can claim copyright.

You said "stolen by someone clicking, copying and re posting as if it were their own information."

Where was the material reposted?

If it was on another Ancestry owned site, that is allowed by their (Find A Grave and their owner Ancestry) Terms of Service. If it was posted on a site NOT owned by Ancestry, there are ways to get it removed by contacting the site owner.

Someone is using my father's celebrity status (with wrong name as I know my own father's birth name) and I could not create a grave on my own father because it is considered a duplicate. Findagrave deleted mine because a "fan" used my father's in his. He refused to transfer to me. I couldn't create my own family connection. How do I do that? I contacted findagrave with no responses. I wish there was a number I could call.

If Find A Grave considers your father "famous" they will take over management of the memorial as they do all famous individuals. If they do not consider your father famous, you can message the creator of the memorial thru the Edit tab (6th option) and write a message, stating your relationship and asking for it to be transferred to you. It is a required transfer.

Find A Grave - Genealogy Record Review

My husband and i were married happily when he passed away. I have 5 stepchildren (from his only other marriage)and 1 natural child One of my stepsons created a findagrave for my husband and listed ONLY his former wife (his mother) she has since deceased and only included his siblings who have passed away. Is it a criteria to ONLY enter deceased family? I dont know the correct way to contact you regarding my question/concern, so Im linking it to this complaint.

it's not violate dead people privacy it's a kind of thing that , if you link living people on a death site. yes they may complain.

some countries like china, hongkong, some people are superstitious that if you link them to dead site they will die quicker/earlier than the expected death date.

this is why better not link any living human on any dead site

Marka
#1268999

yeah it's their rule to only link DEAD people. but if you really wish to link living people you can write

e.g.

Michael J Fox (1961 - )

show that person has NOT died.

but I heard and read that findagrave is only for those who died.

Anonymous
#1271034
@PissedConsumer1268999

If you'd read the rules, you'd see that you're not supposed to include the living people by name. You can say "survived by his wife, two sons, three daughters, eight grandchildren" but not "survived by his wife Mary, sons Joe and Tom, daughter Mary, Jane and Alice".

Anonymous
#1244240

Yes, Find-a-grave is intended to be a place to record (and find) burials/interments etc for those that have already died. It is against their policy to pre-record memorials for the living, although some people will do it anyway. I believe they allow living contributors to make a memorial for themselves, but otherwise it is considered a violation of the living person's privacy.

Some people will include obituary information in memorials, those may or may not list living persons.

You must be one of those ding *** who flower memorials all night long for big numbers. Am i correct?

Anonymous
#1237714

On *** you only link people who are already dead and buried. If there are multiple dead spouses they can be easily added.

However, living relatives can be listed in the biography section. Or, if the memorial holder is being difficult, you can add information leaving a message on the right hand side of the memorial with the flowers etc.

Anonymous
#1238677
@PissedConsumer1237714

The living have no right to be on Find a Grave unless they are also dead!! and contributors should ALWAYS ask for permission from the family of the deceased to go there and enter all their PERSONAL information.

Kind of lame posting death certificates and birth certificates.

I doubt the dead would like this exposed and all their personal history being exploited on this site! Some people are so inconsiderate and brainless!
