Find A Grave in Vidalia, Georgia - Erroneous picture

There is a GROSS error on Find a Grave re two individuals that have been mistakenly identified by a distant cousin (Owen O'Conner) The Memorial for Arthur Warren Pope #99751129 shows a picture of his brother Elton Benjamin Pope #35864836. Elton B. Pope, of Brunswick, GA, died in Milledgeville, GA in 1956 and is buried in Brunswick. Arthur W. died in Alto, Banks Co, of Tuberculosis in 1927 and is buried in Scott, GA. These are my two Great Uncles!

As you know from the post you made in a FaceBook group, Find A Grave determined "Charlie" was famous and took over the memorial. No one gets to keep memorials for famous people, even if they are a relative.

That's just the way the site is. Perhaps a long term member should understand how the site works and not expect special treatment.

The information on death certificates can also be wrong. Good researchers find all the documentation they can for an event: death certificate, grave marker, published obituary/death notice, burial permit/log, probate record, etc. If there is a discrepancy, one must weigh the reliability of the source and make a determination based on the preponderance of evidence.

Find A Grave - Profile Review from Marietta, Georgia

Details
I have found a large number of mistakes in this site due to incorrect compilation of information from other incorrect sources. The Profile Manager is the first to enter the info and if they do not reassign ownership to another and the data the original owner entered is wrong, then the wrong data is forever on the site. There needs to be an arbitrator who can assess sources to determine if the information can be corrected for future use. There are too many people citing too many wrong sites.

There is a very simple process to get any errors corrected on memorials where the original contributor is no longer active. Contact Find A Grave through their various contact emails depending on what issue you have. They are very responsive and can make the necessary changes if your changes are correct.

Find A Grave in Acworth, Georgia - Times out

I teach genealogy courses to Seniors at a local Senior Center and doing so I stress the importance of Findagrave.com to research in cemeteries. Lately, the site has only allowed me to research only 4 or 5 names before displaying "This site is not available". Then after about 5 minutes, it displays the site again and allows me to research another 4 or 5 names before timing out and displaying the warning. This site has not become too time consuming for me to use with any frequency. I will now only recommend Findagrave.com as a back-up until this situation is remedied!

First, are you a member of Find A Grave or just a casual observer from time to time? I have been a member and frequent poster for about 2 years and have never had a problem with any data "timing out on me" and I have been on it for several hours in the past posting data that I have discovered needs to be added to a cemetery.

1. This site tracks your IP address once you register to become a member.

3. They sell your memorials for $5.00 to companies for adds or to members who will sponsor them. They are using your loved ones to earn money. 4.

They have no overhead because kind volunteers like you do all of the work for them, or family creates memorials and later they are mistreated and asked to delete the memorial that later turns up on someones managed list. 5. If they were an ethical company they would not allow just anyone to "manage" memorials. The site admin would manage all of them.

I have a friend who found her murdered father's memorial on the site. The manager would not even transfer this memorial to the hurt daughter. The daughter wanted to manage it so that she could delete it. Nope...

the company makes money off of her murdered fathers grave.6. You may complain to an admin if someone was rude to you. Many admins are themselves so called "members" 7.As a volunteer be very careful if you take photos of family graves in private cemeteries. This is trespassing on private property and stealing an image of a grave so that a company can earn money.

Some very concerned families are taking actions.

I would not volunteer my time to this company any longer. There are many other useful ways to help mankind that do not make money off of the dead.
